In the Name of James Brown was created in honor of the Godfather of Soul and to celebrate a legend, who would be 80 years-old today. Carlton J. Smith exemplifies James Brown’s influence through his discipline as a great show man and his genuine passion as an entertainer. “IN THE NAME OF JAMES BROWN” includes all of the classic James Brown material as well as personal anecdotes about the man himself.

Carlton J. Smith is an R&B/Soul entertainer and songwriter very much in the grand tradition of James Brown, Al Green, The Temptations, and many more. A true aficionado of the genre and era, he has specifically dedicated his career to recording and performing authentic R&B/Soul music. His magnificent stage presence and dynamic performances have been thrilling audiences around the world for years, from the United States all the way to Europe and Asia.Carlton J. Smith produced and hosted a series of R&B soul shows for five years at the B.B. King Blues Club and Grill in New York City.

When James Brown passed away on Christmas Day, 2006, the B.B. King Blues Club and Grill asked Carlton to fulfill the upcoming New Year’s Eve engagement that Mr. Brown had been slated to perform!

He was also selected by Oscar-winning film director Barry Levinson to portray James Brown in the feature-length film, Liberty Heights.
